At Limehurst Academy, our geography curriculum enables students to engage with and make sense of the world around them.  Our programme of study has been designed to enable students to develop the knowledge and skills that help them understand places and processes at a local, national and global scale.  Students investigate both physical and human aspects of geography, focusing on social, economic, environmental and polictical issues in order to discover their role in our increasingly interconnected world.

All students study geography in years 7, 8 and 9.  In years 10 and 11, students can choose to study GCSE Geography. We follow the AQA specification.

Knowledge and understanding

Geography is the study of the world, in fact, ‘geo-graphy’ means to ‘write the world’! As pupils progress throughout their time at Limehurst, the geographical knowledge they acquire helps them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes. We do this by incorporating current affairs and specific examples from around the world to illustrate points and develop their understanding of the world around them.

Skills

Students develop the ability to interpret a wide range of maps in the classroom and the field, including using grid references and scale, and aerial and satellite photographs.

Geography improves literacy in students, expanding their vocabulary whilst enhancing their ability to construct well-structured written responses supported with factual evidence.

Geography builds on students’ numeracy skills providing an opportunity for them to apply mathematics to real life data and situations.

Geography is also about learning beyond the classroom. Fieldwork opportunities throughout their geographical education help develop students’ independent learning  and enquiry skills.

Geography incorporates ‘critical thinking’, students are regulaly asked to evaluate actions from fieldwork to schemes around the world. They understand the positives and limitations and consider ways forward for improvement.

The Future

The study of geography encourages students to want to explore and experience different places around the world.

Many employers prize the knowledge and skills that studying geography can provide, such as: planning research and report writing, working in a team, using new technologies and communication skills – and much more.
